Entrevista Nairobi

English

  • Tell us about yourself.
I’m a 25 years old Nigerian based in Spain for the past 17 years now, I studied a bachelor degree in Tourism and hotel management in Madrid (Universidad Rey Juan Carlos) and after school have worked in that industry, mostly in Hospitality facilities and Customer Services, which are more or less the linked.

I guess my passion for travelling is due to my willingness to learn new cultures and getting to know lots of people around the globe. I try to travel as much as I can and do that as a solo traveler.

Defining myself to others is for me the most difficult thing to do, just because every day I discover a lot of different random stuff about myself that makes me realize I’m still just in the way of growing and knowing myself more. But in few, by today I might say I’m a spontaneous person, that love adventures and definitely a risk taker, that wish and willing to live life to its fullest both in the good and bad fortunes.

  • What are your hobbies?
This is one of those questions I never knew how to answer. What’s a hobby? I guess if a hobby is a list of things you enjoy doing on your free time, mine would be travelling, reading, socializing in public random places with different people and of course chill.

  • Have you volunteered before?
If unpaid trainees and internship counts as volunteering jobs, yeah, I’ve done quite a few of them before. If not so, this indeed is my first time but, not the last.

  • Do you enjoy it?
It was very fun doing it for sure, and the timing was great too, just for few hours is great.

  • What do you think about Portugal?
Portugal is a lovely place to live at. Good weather, nice beaches, friendly people and is cheap for a living, what else can you ask for. Just perfect!

  • What was your job here?
My job was assisting the Housekeeping lady during three hours.

  • Do you recommend it?
I absolutely recommend it; the job doesn’t really require a lot of responsibilities and just for 3 hours is great because you have the rest of the day. I was asked in the beginning to do 2 hours in the morning and 1 hour in the evening, but later I was allowed to do 3 hours and have all the rest of the day off. Personally I think 3 hours at a time and the rest of the day of is far way better.

  • What was the best part? And the worst?
The best was the location of the hostel, and the Hostel itself. In terms of the job, well, it wasn’t too difficult and just for few hours. The worst was the lack of connection to get to the rest of the villages around, because the buses have a very strange schedule that at first is confusing because is different between high and low season and if you are not living there is kind of chaotic. For a city girl like me it was quite lonely. And the worst part of the job? I may say nothing, but I’d have preferred doing something different, because I didn’t felt as if I learnt sometime new.

  • Would you come back?

I will come back, but I prefer reception or any kind of administrative task. A duty that enables me to grow up my professional hospitality skills.

  •          Recomendarias a outras pessoas?

E a pior?

A pior parte do trabalho?

Meet Elly Wood

What can you tell us about yourself?
I am 26 and a primary school teacher from Australia. I have been living in London as a teacher since September 2015 on a working holiday visa and am on my way back to Australia but first traveling for 8 weeks - only 5 days left!

What are your main goals?
My main goals would be to experience life to the fullest. Be successful in the career that I have chosen but also take a broader approach and see where my profession can take me as far as teaching in different countries. I love to travel so I want to see as much of the world as possible and experience all the different cultures and ways of living around the world.

What made you volunteer?
I was traveling with some friends up until I started my time volunteering and they were heading off to visit places I have already visited so I thought why not take this opportunity to have some down time but also meet people and help out somewhere I haven't yet been. It's also a great way for backpackers on a budget to be able to go everywhere they want to go.

Is this your first time? How do you feel about it? Would you do it again?
This is my first time volunteering. I was a little unsure before starting, fear of the unknown I guess, but I did my research and looked at the reviews etc. for the Ria Alvor Hostel and they were all very positive so that helped and made me feel quite confident it was going to be a pleasant experience and it was. I've enjoyed my time here in Alvor and at the hostel and have felt very welcome, relaxed and at home here. I think I would definitely do it again if I were in the position to do so.

What’s the best/worst part of it?
There isn't a worst part; there was nothing bad about the experience. The best part would be that the hostel and guest house are kept so nice and clean which makes for a comfortable environment that I was happy to be around. The staff also, very friendly and helpful. And the experience overall is a nice way to meet new people and discover a new area and explore around the area also

What do you think about the hostel?
I think the hostel is fantastic. It has every facility that a backpacker could ask for and it is kept very clean which makes for a comfortable to stay.

What about Portugal… Do you like it?
From the area I have visited in Portugal (Lisbon, Lagos, Alvor and surroundings), I really like Portugal and would definitely come back. It is a small country but with so much to offer.

What are the differences between Portugal and Australia?

Australia is a very modern country so there the buildings and cities here in Portugal more quaint and have more history to them which makes them interesting and unique.
