1. Who is Chiara? Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m a 22 years old German who just finished my studies in Tourism
Management. I will start working in a Tour operator in Berlin that organizes
trips to South America in September.
2. What made you leave your hometown and embark on an adventure in
Portugal?
I visited Lisbon last year and it is my favorite city ever. I wanted
somewhere where I could have sun all the time and since I didn’t have any plans
for the summer I decided to give it a try.
3. How did you end up working in a hostel?
I just decided in the middle of July I wanted to travel and found out
about this place in Worldpackers.com
It was a really spontaneous application and you weren’t asking for a
fixed term so I came here.
4. What did your job entail? How’s your typical day?
I can sleep a lot. I start working at 10 AM until 12 PM helping with the
cleaning but it’s cool work, not very demanding. After that I take a breakfast
and then rest a little bit while I wait for when it isn’t too hot and go
explore the village, go to the beach or to the market to buy some things. Then
I just need to work another hour in the afternoon.
5. Did you work for cash or free accommodation?
I worked for free accommodation.
6. Have you ever worked at a hostel before ?
No, I just worked in hotels while I was studying as a waitress.
7. What are the differences?
Here it is a lot more relaxed, not really strict and you can talk and
get to know the guests.
8. Would you recommend others to work in a hostel?
I definitely would because it allows you to save money working for free
accommodation and you don’t need to worry about being alone because you can
talk with the clients and make friends.

Visitei Lisboa o ano passado e é a minha
cidade preferida. Queria ir para um sítio onde estivesse sempre sol e como não
tinha planos para o verão decidi experimentar.

que acabaste a trabalhar num hostel?
Só decidi que queria viajar a meio de Julho
e descobri este sítio no worlpackers.com
Foi uma candidatura bastante espontânea e
como vocês não exigiam que ficasse por um tempo determinado, vim para aqui!

Em que
consistia o teu trabalho? Como era o teu dia?
Consigo dormir bastante. Começo a trabalhar
às 10 da manhã até a meio-dia. Ajudo na limpeza mas é um trabalho fácil. Depois
tomo o pequeno-almoço, descanso um bocado e espero que já não esteja muito
calor para ir explorar a vila, ir à praia ou ao mercado comprar alguma coisa. À
tarde só preciso de trabalhar mais uma hora.

Trabalhei por alojamento gratuito.

Já
tinhas trabalhado num hostel anteriormente?
Não, apenas tinha trabalhado em hotéis
enquanto estudava como empregada de mesa.

Quais
são as diferenças?
Aqui o ambiente é muito mais relaxado e não
é muito exigente. Posso falar e conhecer os clientes.

Recomendarias
outras pessoas a trabalhar num hostel?
Definitivamente. Permite-nos economizar enquanto
trabalhamos por alojamento gratuito e não precisamos de nos preocupar em estar
sozinhos porque podemos falar com os clientes e criar amizades.
